Clemens Gadenstätter – Biography

Clemens Gadenstätter (1966, Zell am See, Austria) studied composition with Erich Urbanner and Helmut Lachenmann, and flute at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Since 2003 he has been Professor of Music Theory and Analysis at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, where he also teaches composition. Guest professorships followed in Dresden (2013/14) and Oslo (2017/18). He was a lecturer at the Darmstadt Summer Courses (2014), Impuls Academy Graz (2013, 2015), and COURSE Kyiv/Lviv (2015, 2017).

His work explores the interplay of listening, understanding, and composing, focusing on perception, affect, and the semantics of sound. Key cycles include E.P.O.S. (les premiers cris, les cris des lumières, les derniers cris), Semantical Investigations I & II, the Paramyth series (häuten, schlitzen, reißen, platzen/bersten), the Iconosonics cycle, and the multimedia project daily transformations (with Anna Henckel-Donnersmark and Lisa Spalt).

Commissions have come from the Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik (WDR), Donaueschinger Musiktage (SWR), Salzburg Festival, Wien Modern, Steirischer Herbst, and ensembles such as Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Recherche, l’instant donné (Paris), Asamisimasa (Oslo), and the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart.

He has collaborated with orchestras including the RSO Vienna, RSB Berlin, Orchestre Philharmonique Luxembourg, and with conductors such as Peter Eötvös, Peter Rundel, Beat Furrer, Pascal Rophé, and Johannes Kalitzke.

Awards include the Erste Bank Composition Prize, the DAAD Berlin Artists’ Programme, and the Recognition Prize of the City of Vienna.

His music is documented on labels such as Kairos, Col Legno, Durian, and ORF Zeitton.
